BMW just announced the specs and details for the 2015 M3 to arrive in showrooms in early Summer 2014.

  • Utilize a 3.0L turbocharged inline-six engine making 425 hp and 406 lb-ft of torque
  • 176 lbs lighter and 25% more fuel efficient than the previous M3
  • 0-6 mps in 4.1 seconds with 6-speed manual transmission, 3.9 secons with option 7-speed DCT

BMW is departing from the v8 in the M3 platform to go back to the inline-six in turbocharged dressing.  The 425 hp is produced in the 5,500-7,300 rpm range with 406 lb-ft of torque at 1,850-5,500 rpm.

Fuel consumption, weight, and emissions will all be down in the fifth gen M3.  The car will utilize carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP) and aluminum on the chassis, a CFRP roof compared to steel, and a revised gearbox.

The M3 also comes with a limited-slip differential tied to the DSC system to manage wheel spin.  DSC can be switched off completely if the driver wants to get a little crazy.  The car is also equipped with electronic power steering with three different driving modes based on the intended use at the time.

The M3 will debut at the 2014 North American International Auto Show in Detroit, MI where more specs and pricing will be announced.
